Riding the Legacy/Canmore Trail between Banff and Canmore
The Legacy Trail is a newly built paved trail that makes a safe, and fun ride between Banff and Canmore possible. The first section was built by Parks Canada. It follows the Trans-Canada Hwy from the town of Banff to the Banff National Park Gates. Along the way you can make a short side trip to the Cascade Ponds and there is also a great lunch stop roughly halfway along the trail at the Valleyview Picnic Area.
It has become so immensely popular that in 2013, the trail was extended from the park gate to the town of Canmore and now terminates at the Travel Alberta Information Centre where a new parking lot has been built to accommodate all of the bikers. From the official trail end it is a short ride to downtown Canmore along city streets and pathways. Total distance is approx. 24 kilometres.
The creation of the Legacy Trail makes a one way trip between 2 towns a great way to enjoy the mountains and get some beautiful cycling in!
The trail can be ridden in either direction but the best direction to ride is from Banff to Canmore. There is slightly more downhill from Banff to Canmore, the bridge crossing over the highway goes with the traffic flow, and best of all, the wind is almost always at your back!
Allow 2 - 3 hours from Banff to Canmore and longer from Canmore to Banff.
